Basic Turkey Wing with Larry Antonuk

Sunday, September 13th | 10 am – 4 pm

In this class, students will learn the basic concepts of broom making by making small whisk brooms in a “turkey wing” style. Juried artist Larry Antonuk will bring students up to speed on the use of the “tumble spool,” the main tool of the small broom maker. By the end of the class, participants will leave with two or more brooms of their choice of style and color.

The art of broom making reached its pinnacle in New England during the late 1800’s, driven mainly by the various Shaker museums. Prior to the industrial revolution most towns had several broom-making shops. The average farmhouse held over a dozen brooms of different styles, suited ideally to an individual task. In this class, we’ll create some of the original designs, using authentic broom corn and other materials.

Tuition is $80 per student with an additional materials fee of $20 paid by cash or check to the instructor at the time of the class.

Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Those who wish to attend MUST sign up by Monday, September 7th
